On September 24, 2024, KaiOS, a prominent operating system that enables internet access on low-cost devices, established a strategic alliance with Mastercard. This collaboration aims to integrate a suite of digital payment solutions into KaiOS-powered devices, starting in Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria. The initiative is designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets, which often face challenges in adopting digital payments due to the high costs and technical difficulties associated with traditional payment terminals. Through this partnership, businesses can now use low-cost devices to safely accept payments via Mastercard’s QR Pay by Link, with contactless Tap and Go functionality to follow soon.
The partnership marks a significant step toward fostering financial inclusion, with KaiOS and Mastercard focusing on African markets initially. This effort will provide SMEs with a simple sign-up process and immediate access to secure digital payment options. Both companies share a commitment to bridging the gap in financial accessibility, with Mastercard’s Chief Product Officer, Jorn Lambert, highlighting the importance of expanding acceptance solutions for underserved communities. KaiOS CEO Sebastien Codeville emphasized that this collaboration unlocks new opportunities for small businesses by transforming affordable internet devices into powerful business tools, driving digital inclusion in developing regions.
