Klarna Steps Up US Expansion With GoCardless Partnership

Global digital payments and shopping giant Klarna is continuing to make inroads in the U.S., stepping up its efforts in this department with its recently announced partnership with account-to-account digital payment servicer GoCardless. GoCardless’ bank debit payment option will be used for Klarna’s unique Pay in 4 and financing solutions, with shoppers now having the option to have funds debited directly from their bank account.

The partnership is the latest in Klarna’s series of bold moves into the U.S. market, continuing to offer new services targeted at the younger shoppers who make up the key user base of the company’s popular BNPL offerings. “The U.S. is a key market for Klarna, and we continue to see strong growth, doubling our customer base to over 21 million from last year,” said Klarna CTO Koen Köppa in a statement about the new collaboration.

GoCardless is similarly optimistic about the opportunities afforded by its alliance with Klarna. Its Co-Founder and CEO, Hiroki Takeuchi, predicted continued rapid growth in the alternative payments sector in markets around the world, and cited the particular importance of digital account-to-account payments in lieu of traditional credit cards for providing consumers the means to quickly and conveniently make payments.
